What is happening in the electric car sector?

What is happening in the electric car sector?

After a period of relative calm, the electric car market has sprung to life over the last couple of years with a number of cars hitting the market and numerous concept cars on the verge of hitting the production trail. So what exactly is going on in the electric car market and what can we expect in the future?

The ATNMBL electric vehicle

The ATNMBL is one of the more bizarre electric concept vehicles under consideration although when you find out it is from the team who created the Google G1 phone then perhaps it is something we should take note of. While at first glance this particular vehicle looks bizarre to say the least, when you consider it is a concept vehicle for the market in 2040 then perhaps we can take a more long-term and futuristic approach.

Is the revolution set to hit the capital?

Is the revolution set to hit the capital?

In many ways London is the city which leads where the rest of the UK follows, something which the electric car industry hopes will prove correct in the future. The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, has announced plans for at least 100,000 electric cars to be using London’s roads by 2025 although as you might have guessed, where Boris Johnson is involved, these plans do not necessarily appear straightforward.

So what exactly is going on, what has Boris Johnson promised and what are the potential problems?

Electric cars in London

Boris Johnson has released plans for the introduction of up to 100,000 electric cars to London by 2025 as the capital of the UK looks to lead the electric car revolution across the country. While these plans are very adventurous they are also very encouraging and further cement the electric car industry in the thoughts and hopes for the UK transport network in the future. While the scheme has been well received by the vast majority of individuals and environmentally friendly associations, there is much work to be done and many potential pitfalls to avoid.

How will the authorities tax electric cars?

How will the authorities tax electric cars?

As we covered in one of our earlier posts the idea for electric vehicles has been around for nearly 100 years although there has been limited progress prior to the last decade. When you consider that the more traditional petrol and diesel powered vehicles cause harm to the environment, use up vital natural resources, can be expensive to maintain and are dominated by the cost of oil, surely there must be a reason why electric cars have not taken off?

There are many conspiracy theories and ideas as to why the electric car market has yet to take off, all of which ultimately boil down to money and government budgets. So why exactly have electric cars failed to take off as yet?

Government budgets

When you consider that the UK government, as an example, earns billions upon billions of pounds a year in taxation on petrol and diesel it is not difficult to see why there has been some apparent unease at the introduction of electric cars. Literally overnight governments around the world could see billions upon billions of pounds wiped off their annual budgets forcing them to find new ways to tax the public and businesses to make up for potential shortfalls.

Do we have the power yet?

Do we have the power yet?

In this age of green policies and quests to save the environment the subject of electric cars is something which has become more and more central to more and more governments around the world. While many people may believe that electric cars are a fairly new addition to the worldwide transport sector you may be surprised to learn that the electric car is one of the oldest vehicle designs in the world and has a history which goes back to the 1830s.

However, there are many issues to cover with regards to the electric car market, why it has not taken off as yet, what is holding it back and what the future holds.
